Stand Like a Lighthouse, But Show Up Like an Actor

[00:00:00] Hi everyone. This is Steven Booth with the Genius Publishing Studio and Genius Book Publishing, as I’m sure you’re all aware. This is gonna be probably a pretty quick one. I wanna modify something that I’ve been talking about for a while. I had a revelation, and I wanted to share it with you. I talk a lot about being a lighthouse, standing in one place and being where people can find you.

And I stand by that statement. I’m not changing that. I’m adding to it. Okay? So here you are, you’re a lighthouse. You’re sweeping the ocean with your light. You’re not using a search light to find the boats. You’re letting the boats find you. Okay? Which is lovely except for if we change the model just a little bit.

And instead of being a lighthouse, look at yourself like an actor. I once worked on a book by an actor named Pat Skipper, who is a working actor, and he was basically writing a book about how to be a working actor. And I was reading through it recently, and I realized [00:01:00] that he has a lot of parallel messages to what I have to say.

And one of the things that he said was that in order to get a part, you have to go where the decisions are being made. You have to audition for the part where the decisions are being made. You can’t just show up anywhere and expect to get discovered. So the lighthouse still works, but you still have to show up where the decisions are being made, and that means that you have to go where people are making decisions.

All right? I know I’m repeating myself, but I wanna make sure you’re getting it. If you’re waiting for people to find you, you’re gonna be waiting a long time. You need to go where the people are making decisions. And that means as a book author, or a marketing books, you have to go to book signings.

You have to go to speaking engagements. You have to go to community rooms to [00:02:00] talk to people who are interested in your subject. Whether that’s fiction or nonfiction or whatever. The whole point is if you’re just going to establish yourself on Substack, let’s just use Substack as an example.

I know a lot of you don’t use Substack, but if you’re just gonna establish yourself on Substack so that people can find you, that’s great. But you still have to show up on podcasts, for example, or get interviewed by the local newspaper or whatever they’re calling them nowadays. TV station, radio station, whatever.

You have to initiate that. You have to show up to the audition and make sure that you’re being seen by the right kind of people. And that brings up another issue: if you’re in the wrong spot and you’re not getting the results that you’re expecting, don’t try harder.

Look at the data; you’re spending time in a particular place on a particular medium, and nothing’s happening. Chances are you’re not in a place where [00:03:00] people are looking for what you have to say. You do have to go to places where the people are looking for your Message that does not necessarily mean that you need to do this online. Online is simplest, it’s easiest, and it isn’t necessarily best. So get on Podmatch or whatever service you want to get on podcasts. I did that, and I’ve had four podcasts in a week.

And I have two more podcasts coming up. Yay, me. Good for me. I got podcasts. Now you do it. Make sure that whatever it is, you don’t just sit around and wait for people to find you, because the chances are they won’t. You can’t amplify a signal if there’s no signal. I’ve said this before. Your signal is showing up in real places where people can see you auditioning for the part, if you will, and then being where people can find you after you’ve done that thing.

That’s my modification. You have to [00:04:00] audition for the part, and then you have to show up where people can find you. If you could do that, your chances of being found are much higher because you went out there and did the thing that you needed to do. There are other things that I want to talk about.

I’ll probably record another video today. But the fact of the matter is you need to show up where decisions are being made. You need to audition for your part. Then you can stand where people can find you. In that order, that’s my message. So thank you very much. This is Steven Booth, and I will see you in the next video.
